The bead description mentioned compile errors in hash.rs from API drift,
but those errors were either already fixed or misattributed. The API usage
was already correct:
- compute_fingerprint already takes 3 arguments with source
- len() already propagates Result with ?
- read_at method already used correctly
- Catalog fields accessed via trailer correctly
Only cleanup: removed unused std::fs::File and std::io imports.
Verification: notes/bf-4mkhv.md
The extract_markdown stub was calling extract_text instead of
extract_text_fn, causing a compilation error. This fixes the
function name to match the exported function from extract_text.rs.
This completes the extract_text PyO3 entry point implementation,
which was already present in extract_text.rs and lib.rs.

both page_index and page_number are always present and page_number = page_index + 1
- Add test_page_json_roundtrip_with_all_fields: verifies full roundtrip
serde preservation of all PageJson fields
- Update docs/schema/v1.0/pdftract.schema.json PageResult definition:
- Add page_number field (1-based, = page_index + 1)
- Add page_label field (optional, from /PageLabels number tree)
- Add width and height fields (page geometry in points)
- Add rotation field (0, 90, 180, 270 degrees)
- Add type field with enum: text, scanned, mixed, broken_vector, blank, figure_only
- Update required fields to include all page-level fields
Acceptance criteria:
✅ Page serializes with both page_index AND page_number
✅ PDF with /PageLabels [{S: "r"}] produces page_label "i", "ii", "iii" etc
✅ PDF without /PageLabels -> page_label absent
✅ JSON Schema enum for page_type includes all values
✅ Roundtrip serde Page test passes

Add JavascriptActionJson schema field and detection logic for embedded
JavaScript in PDFs. Per TH-04 security requirement, JavaScript is
detected but NEVER executed. Presence is flagged via JAVASCRIPT_PRESENT
diagnostic and surfaced in metadata.javascript_actions[].
Schema changes:
- Add JavascriptActionJson struct with location and code_excerpt fields
- Add javascript_actions array to DocumentMetadata and ExtractionResult
- Update Output::new() to initialize empty javascript_actions array
JavaScript detection:
- Create javascript module with detect_javascript() function
- Scan /OpenAction, /AA, page /AA, and annotation /A entries
- Emit SecurityJavascriptPresent diagnostic at INFO level when JS found
- Return actions with truncated code excerpts (200 char max)
Integration:
- Call detect_javascript() in extract_pdf() after thread extraction
- Include javascript_actions in result_to_json() output
Tests:
- Create TH-04-js-presence.rs with 4 test cases
- Verify 3 JS actions detected, diagnostic emitted, JSON output correct
- Include negative test for PDFs without JavaScript
- Tests skip gracefully when fixture not yet created

- Fixed missing fields in BlockJson, SpanJson, ExtractionOptions initializations
- Added feature gates to ocr_integration tests for conditional compilation
- Fixed McpServerState::new calls to include audit writer argument
- Fixed CCITTFaxDecoder::decode calls to use instance method
- Fixed type casts for ObjRef::new calls
- Fixed serde_json::Value method calls (is_some -> !is_null)
- Fixed ProfileType test feature gates
- Worked around lifetime issues in schema roundtrip tests
These changes fix numerous compilation errors that were blocking the
codebase from building. The main library and tests now compile successfully.

Implement repair_hyphenation() that detects and repairs end-of-line
hyphenation within blocks. Joins hyphenated words across line breaks
when the hyphen is at the column right edge and the continuation
starts with a lowercase letter.
Key features:
- Detects hyphens: -, ‐ (U+2010), ‑ (U+2011), soft hyphen (U+00AD)
- Right-edge detection: span bbox.x1 within 5% of column width
- Lowercase continuation check to avoid joining sentences
- Column-aware: only joins spans in same column
- Cleans up empty spans/lines after repair
Adds HasBBox and HyphenableSpan traits for flexible span types.
Includes 9 comprehensive tests covering all acceptance criteria.
Fixes pre-existing test cases in schema module (missing column field).

Phase 7.4.5 implementation: Wire combined Vec<(String, FormFieldValue)> from
combiner into document-level /form_fields JSON output with tagged union schema.
- Add FormFieldJson, FormFieldTypeJson, FormFieldValueJson, ChoiceValueJson to schema
- Add form_fields: Vec<FormFieldJson> to ExtractionResult (always emitted, empty when none)
- Implement acro_field_to_value() converter for Phase 7.4.2 type-specific extraction
- Wire form field extraction in extract_pdf(): walk AcroForm, extract XFA, combine with XFA-wins
- Add convert_form_field_to_json() helper for FormFieldValue → FormFieldJson conversion
- Update docs/schema/v1.0/pdftract.schema.json with form_fields $defs and required field
- Add form_fields_to_markdown() to markdown module for Form Fields footer table
Schema shape: /form_fields is array of {name, type, value, default?, page_index?, rect?,
required, read_only, multiline?, max_length?, options?, multi_select?, selected?,
state_name?, pushbutton?, radio?}. Type field is tagged enum: "text", "button", "choice",
"signature". Value field varies by type (string|boolean|string|array|uint|null).

Implement char-weighted median aggregation of per-span readability
scores into a page-level score stored in extraction_quality.readability.
Algorithm:
- Collect (score, char_count) pairs from spans
- Sort by score ascending
- Walk sorted list accumulating character counts
- Return score at half-total-char position
Acceptance criteria:
- Single span: returns its score
- Multiple spans: char-weighted median (longer spans count more)
- Empty page: returns 0.0
- All-perfect: returns 1.0

Implement the Receipt struct and lite-mode JSON serialization for
visual citation receipts. This provides cryptographic proof of
provenance for extracted text.
Changes:
- Add Receipt struct with 6 fields (pdf_fingerprint, page_index,
bbox, content_hash, extraction_version, svg_clip)
- Implement Receipt::lite() constructor with NFC normalization
- Integrate Receipt into SpanJson and BlockJson schemas
- Add unicode-normalization and serde_json dependencies
Acceptance criteria:
- Receipt::lite() produces valid receipts with svg_clip=None
- Lite mode JSON omits svg_clip key via skip_serializing_if
- Content hash uses NFC normalization for cross-platform stability
- Receipt wired into SpanJson and BlockJson types
Note: 100 receipts aggregate size is ~27 KB (not 15 KB as planned).
The 15 KB target is not achievable with required field sizes.
